The Swifts
Like a leviathan I lumber in slow ease
Swimming long lengths of my beachside pool
Silky swifts sweep down from the trees
And skim the surface to sip the cool
Water, take a fleeting bath
And perhaps to mock me with their wings
While I spout and wallow they laugh
At the great white whale that’s floundering
As if to say: ‘Look at our temperance,
And our lightness, in an instant we are sated;
While for you a lifetime of self-indulgence
Can never fill that emptiness you created’

Four Women
[Penang airport 26/2/19 waiting for flight to Bangkok]
Two English dowagers, identical grey hair,
Chat softly in Surrey accents, ‘Oh, you know’
En route to the River Kwae
Well organised, soft-spoken, pensioners on the go
Delicate Thai girl, tapping at a phone
Ripped jeans, flowery bags, flip-flops
Quiet as a minnow, smiling at the screen
Light as light itself, soft as a rain drop
Tall American, jabbing at her laptop
Rasping drawl, deals to be made right now
Her voice annoys me I wish she’d stop
Three serene and one like a screech owl

Scooter, tuk-tuk, auntie, farang
Conspire to block my path
Like the smell of ripe durian
I’m repulsed yet intoxicated with its charm
Beauty, ugliness, sweat and kaya
Like incense fill the air
Easier to swim the Chao Praya river
Than dodge six lanes of traffic here
And mighty Bangkok forges its way
Through the karma of ten million wais
The hopeful, the innocent, the guilty and the gay

Thai smiles nowhere to be seen
The two english ladies I saw in Penang
Are sitting behind me once more
Their accents contrast with the chinese clang
How was the Kwae? ‘Lovely! Oh you know’
I chose boredom over anxiety
And arrived three hours too soon
I’m missing my Art Deco society
And the waves lapping near my bedroom
Who do I bother to travel?
People-pleasing at huge expense
Ripped-off, stressed-out, the pointless skedaddle
For the sake of more fragrance and stench

The Sounds
At night here now I turn off the fan
So I can hear the sound of the waves on the beach
The intake and exhaling of the ocean
My bed becoming a ship at sea
But Penang is not some desert shore
It was built on trade in spice and teak
So the island is always calling for more
Traffic along its busy streets
And when a dog barks another answers its call
And soon the lorong is a howling frenzy
And then you can barely hear the waters
And hide your head from the infernal din
But as the scooters fade from the gate
And mongrels go back to fitful sleep
Slowly the gentle sighs from the straits
Again submerge you in the waters deep

More exciting than the Penang train
But the top is crowded like bees
So we take our pics and descend

I refuse to choose, opt for spring rolls
A platter of crustaceans is there, claws to grab

I'm Sorry
03:28
|

I’m Sorry
E C#m
I’m like Peter Rabbit in the garden
B F#m
Running wild in the carrot patch
E B A B
Never meaning to do any harm
F#m A B
But with a greed and an ego to match
Never thinking of old Mr McGregor
Or the sadness I leave behind
On an endless quest for sensual pleasure
Only me me me going round in my mind
A D
And I’m sorry my darling
F#m G
For being such a fool
C G F Am
Help me to cast off the misery my self brings
B C#m B A G#m F#m E B
So we can stay together just me and you
Creating more and more bad karma
Hearing you crying down the phone
Promising to change, feeling like a sinner
Praying I can make you happy again
Chorus

Zen Master
03:08
|

The Zen Master
G Bm/D
I watch him walk to work
Em G
Like Charlie Chaplin in slow motion
Am G
No bowler hat but a battered brollie
D Am
Taking the path down to the ocean
All day he sweeps the beach
Bent over double as he gently clears
The leaves and remains of spent barbecues
Into orange plastic sacks which he wears
G D
Around his waist like rodeo pants
Am C - D
In his arms an old rattan broom
Am G-D
Never does he speak when I bid him good-day
Em - D - C- D
But his head rises and his smile lifts the gloom
from my lonely morning trudging home
Along the sand in the burgeoning sun
His wrinkled face shows me wisdom and grace
Mine reflects ony regrets from a life that’s run
Am G- D
And I wish I could cry ‘Oh Master set me free!
Am G- D
From the cruel demons in my mind
Am G- D
Teach me the secret of your contented life
Am C - D Em
So I may be like you, and happiness find’

This Is Love
D A G
I’d given up on hope
Bm A G
Of being needed by someone

The best I could wish for was learning to cope

With a life contented but all alone
A C#m
And when we first met
F#m Bm
You were just another to fill my day
D A Bm
I never thought we would ever get
A Bm A G
So close we could ever say:
D A F C
This is Love
D A F G
Yeh Yeh This is love
D A F C
Selfless wonderful love
G D F C
From the heavens above
Bb
Beautiful cherishing love
We are worlds apart in every way
But when we touch we are one
When we laugh and kiss we both want to stay
Together to let this run and run

We’re One
D Em7
When you act like a child
Bm7 G
And its driving me wild
D Bm7 Em A
I don’t know the right thing to say
And you’re giving me the eye
Leave me gazing at the sky
I think if this is us I don’t want another day
Em D
But love isn’t only endless charms
Em G - A
And nights spent in each other’s arms
Bm Em
When the rain falls
Bm G
And the darkness calls
A Em G A
It’s love that brings us out the other side
Em A
Because we’re one
Em A
And we’re gonna stay as one
Em A
And we’ve two hearts that beat as one
D A G A
Whatever the weather we’ll be together
D Em G
Because we’re one
When we walk on the sand
And you’re holding my hand
I don’t know where our lives will go
And we try to make plans
But we’re dreaming in wonderland
Sometimes I feel like I’m losing hope
But love isn’t about where we want to be
And our future’s not guaranteed
When there’s all to lose
And its looking like we’re through
It’s love that will bring you back to me
Chorus
Bm A
Yeh Darling I know things will work out fine
Em A
As long as I’m yours….and you’re mine

Marcus Aurelius
My mind is my servant
But its waving a big stick
Turning my head so I just can’t
Get through this day, feeling sick
With worries of what’s to come
Forgetting the blessings of the present
Driving me down to a place like some
Hell full of pain and torment
Cm Gm Fm Gm
It’s not out there but it’s here the battle’s fought
Cm Bb G#
Between me and my errant brain
Gm Cm Bb
I need to revoke these treasonous thoughts
Eb Bb D7
Make myself the master again
Gm Bb
This is my power and mine alone
Cm Bb
Not over the world but in my estimate
D Gm
Of all the troubles my eyes have known
Bb Cm D7
I revoke the suffering my servant makes
