Meadows
Palmer field is flooded;
My cycle flounders like an old horse,
valiantly staggering along familiar tracks,
but creaking with tired spent force
Heart pounding in The Weirs,
through the Itchen's dereliction of its train
As it seeks and easier softer way
to freedom in the icy flood plains
Walkers and their dogs like lazy zombies
form legions of the damned to block my way.
My bell tolls for their repentance
But they hear not it's soliloquy.
The cafe brings me hot Greek coffee,
an ashtray, smoke, Venus shining down
Alone I can muse on this epitaph;
hot shores exchanged for this cold dank town.

Lent
Trundle over to the cathedral ref
Past Thomas Thetcher, pipped by weazels
Welcomed by my robin, anointed with ash;
meet up with the old crowd, coughs and sneezes
Talk about movies, sport and scandals,
dodgy eyes, ears, bladders and knees;
Holidays abroad, restaurants and art
Who will care for us in our hour of need
Old men clinging to the ruins of youth
rich memories, legacies from a golden time
Abandoned pride and dreams of greatness
No longer scared to face the final sunset
One by one we fade away
our wisdom unwelcome with the hubris of youth
our wealth squandered, our good names slandered,
the battalions of ignorance march over our dead

Then down cross bridges, the slow lane back
Avington church, a pansied well
Sweep past the lake, ancient woods of yew
Arts and Crafts house, two fat old sows
Plain sailing to Easton, meadows soaked in dew
The Cricketers pub past its glory days
St Clements, a fag, the long hill climb
A derelict road cut off by motorway
The Winnal estate, 70's grime

63 today!
Let's get this over with now please
Chuff on to heaven
Car boot sale beckons
Boxwood ruler from my youth
trumps cracked fake Ming plate
Lunch Seven Stars pub
Jock Woodhouse looks over our meal
Our help not needed
Chithurst is empty
We get lost looking for spring
Nibbhana postponed
Steep narrow lane blocked
Who will reverse, them or me?
As usual it's me

waits for Virgin crosscountry
Stopping at Oxford?
Old lady in panic
Am I in coach C or D?

Not same dreaming spires
Pitt-Rivers museum
Fossils beg to schoolchildren
Bury me again
Wadham is open
Rainbow flag flies high with pride
Dorothy weeps now

March Tankas
Me, J, love broken
cars and shacks lying in fields;
steeped in toxic waste,
deep in Kentucky mountains
waiting decades for kind nerds
Deep holes in jungle
dug by vietnamese girl.
Earth moves by magic;
fire burns, she cooks wild fresh fish;
we can hide there for ever
Weird songs by Jim White
drift gently through the bayou;
church rings with rapture.
Genes and poison make strange folk
Me and J are proof of this.

Mischarged for a flat white
Should I pay them back one pound?
Karma always wins
Chance meet a friend of Bill
Our good friend fell off wagon
He left the saloon
We love toxic waste
St Catherine's Hill has eyes
Me and J look down
Chat then just silence
I could hardly be ruder
Turn on heel and run
Hildeberg look harsh
Do you want milk with coffee?
Says 'Enjoy!' then smiles

Take front five coaches
Or you will be left behind
A life in Bournemouth
Design a table
Impossible to open
Southwest Trains welcomes
Walk to Portland Bill
Where I saw Roger Whittaker
Sing Last Farewell
Left my stick behind
In the five rear carriages
But it tracked me down
Squirrels friendly here
Hardy better than Austen
Dorset trumps Hampshire
