Penang Airport 14th March 2020
Am G Bm Am
A door is closing, actually many doors
Em G Am B7
As the sun is setting over Bukit Genting
Em D
So it sets on my Penang dreams
Am Em
On Love, and hope and the pre-covid feasting
Bm C
at wet markets, sensuality and freedom
B7
to travel, to relish and be as one
The door that opens is dark March grey
Muddy paths trodden alone in virtue
Perhaps a chance of cold redemption
To Cast off all the lies for a life that's true
Next week may bring a death-hacking fever
Or a Spring that lifts my soul forever
Em D
The flight is boarding, night has drawn in
Am Em
Tomorrow I will be back in Hampshire
Bm Am
Drinking English tea far from my life of sin
G B7
But forever missing the oriental fire
TJD 14/3/20
3 Haikus: 13th March 2020
Dmaj7 Cmaj7/D
Tomorrow all change
D Em
One more night of normal life
G
Then Armageddon
Those around don't know
In two weeks some will be dead
I cannot save them
Bm Em
People are smiling
Bm G - A
Just another friday night
Em
Little do they know

Lan’s Corner
E D C#m Bm
Lan’s Corner beside the jalan
A Bm C#m Bm
In the sultry early evening heat
E D C#m Bm
Only me and some old lounge jazz
A Bm C#m D
Stray cats and the staff half-asleep
A Bm A Bm
A pint of golden Thee Tarikh
A D C#m
Sweeter than liquid sugar cane
A Bm A Bm
A chicken chop smothered in sauce that’s thick
D C#m Bm
As the sweat running down my face
Chinese and expats rarely venture here
Because there’s no beer and the service is slow
But for me as long shadows fall from the Almond trees
I’m at peace in the soft twilight glow
Far from excitement, good company and laughter
Basking in the melancholy of my solitary course
Just orchids and Arum and Dogwood to savour
Flies and mosquitoes, then home along the shore

Treading Time
Intro: E G#m F#m G#m x2, E G#m A B, F#m
E G#m F#m G#m
I’m walking along the strand
E G#m F#m G#m
Treading slow my feet in the sand
E G#m A B
Got the paper in my hand
F#m
And I’m dreaming
You could say I’m doing nothing
But I don’t care what’s happening
Got no worries about a thing
And I’m singing
Chorus:
E F#m G#m A
I’m treading time
E F#m G#m F#m
Treating life like a glass of wine
E F#m G#m A
Sipping slowly cos it tastes just fine
F#m
Treading time
Watching people pass me by
Trailing last in the race to die
Going nowhere don’t ask me why
I’m laughing
Chorus
G#m F#m G#m F#m
So I aint got cash to burn
E F#m A B
And people say I missed my turn
G#m F#m G#m F#m
But I know where I want to be

It don’t take money to set me free

St Peter and St James
D E/A G A
Go with the flow of clear water
Em7 D A
From the first gasp of unchosen birth
D E/A G A
Through childhood, the sound of laughter
Em7 D A
To motherhood, love and mirth
G A Bm Em
The river runs fast and free
G D Em7
Carrying treasures from your past
G A Bm Em
Where it leads you can only see
G D Em7
Once you reach the sea at last
But there it does not truly end
From those cool still deeps you will rise
BAck into the sky as a cloud ascend
To fall as rain onto mountains high
Now you can rest, your journey’s done
Your vessel becomes driftwood in the waves
Those of us left must further run
With clear water, blessed with the joy you gave

F7 D#7 Dm7 D#7
Walk along the old railway line
F7 D#7 Dm7 D#7
Whistling Jake Thackray songs
F7 D#7 Dm7 D#7
Past the yachts moored in the winter creek

While the wind blows from the downs
Reach inside an old donkey jacket
For some Golden Virginia
Walk through Freshwater town
Looking for the ginger jar

A pot of tea in the Ginger Jar

Takes me back to a distant past

That time back in Seventy-five

The last time I was glad to be
Alive

Verse 2:
Take the path back across the fields
Past the old de Quincey's farm
Home as the early night draws in
With the Souwester blowing hard
Play chess before a driftwood fire
Listen to 'All Things Must Pass'
Hear the shipping bouys out at sea
Lapse back into memories

Swish
Bm F#m
Swish swish swish
C#m Bm
Go my flip-flopped feet on the sand
A Bm
I could spend all day in a state of bliss
A Bm
Just listening to this gentle sound
F C
But in a moment my mind has carried me away
Am D
To a fantasy inside my troubled mind
Am G
My genius of a brain has turned the day
F - Am E7
Into one in which no peace I can find
Swish swish swish
Come back to our soft embrace
Say my legs and the sea: We only wish
For you to stay with our present pace
Swish swish swish or worry worry worry
Which of the two should I choose?
Slow slow slow or hurry hurry hurry
Pain and torment or my old plastic shoes?

Permai
Em C
Nothing Heritage about this place
Em G - Am
Utilitarian concrete at the base of the hills
D D#/D D
Masquerading as a Spanish Hacienda
Fmaj7 C
But not built to last and one day will
G F
Become as empty shell like others around
G-F Am
Built on sand and poorly maintained
I choose a Mexican pork burger
With crinkle fries and a glass of thee tarikh
The Chinese staff welcome me with smiles
And the drinks lady is at my table quick
But mosquitoes are buzzing at my ankles
And some American families make me rankle
And I’m wishing you were here with me
To say ‘chok dee’ when our drinks chink
But I drive home alone beside Bukit Mutiara
Solitude becomes loneliness for what can never be
Beauty and despair beside the Phrygian Sea.

Lucifer
F Am
He called me Lucifer
Em Am F Em
and I hated him, hoped he would disappear;
Am Em F G Am
no longer wanting the adult child here
Em Am
with a mind poisoned with hate and fear
But packing his pitiful things in a rucksack
so he could sleep alone in a frosty park
my heart wept and begged his soul to come back
to his home, his family, away from the dark
Bb Am Dm C
I pack rugs and food, a packet of cigarettes
F Am Dm
Trying to ease the black night in his soul.
F C Gm A
A family photo, a torch and my regrets
Bb C A7
that I couldn't be there, make him whole
His feet are battered and bruised
He limps and can barely see
A friend guides his beaten body, confused,
lonely, sleepless, cold, in misery
We chant and pray that he may find his way
back to our warm parental arms
Our son, the tissue from our bodies combined,
Bb C Dm
Returned from madness and harm

Back in Nyewood
Em Bm F Am
I'm back in Nyewood, looking for Nicholas*
F C Dm7
and needing to be back on the South Downs Way
Em Bm F Am
it's hot in late May, the wild flowers around us
F C E7
The hills are before us, the meadows full of hay
Am G B7
Past Torberry Hill through beeches and yew
Em C F E7
then up a steep track to the high dusty trail
Am Bm C Dm
East 'till mighty Harting Down is in view
E7 F Am
then back through a forest, the wind on our tail
Through pastures and orchards then up a quiet lane
a tunnel through a cornfield to the brow of a hill
A wide valley, no humans, the buzzard's domain
The Great Plantation, a bridge over a rill
Across the marshland past a white dead tree
to the railway closed in fifty-five
short of water, leg-sore needing tea
But back at our car, glad to be alive
